I decided to exercise my brain a bit and learn something new. I’m mostly a Windows developer (VB, .Net, SQL Server), although lately the day job hasn’t offered much in the way of development work…mostly integration, interfacing and administration around vendor products (nothing too exciting).

I thought briefly about attempting to do some iPhone development, but the cost of entry for a hobby is a little high since you have to code on a Mac (which I do not own at the moment). Instead I opted to revisit a technology that I had very briefly investigated a few years ago, Ruby on Rails (RoR). I was always impressed by the overall philosophy behind RoR and decided that it is plenty mature enough for me to dig in. Plus, I might even be able to whip up some web apps for the iPhone instead of attempting native apps.

So, I have downloaded Bitnami’s RubyStack for a quick and easy RoR development environment and Aptana Studio which seems to be a very nice IDE. I’ll also probably take a look at Joe Hewitt’s iui framework for making iPhone web apps look more like native ones. Time to dig into the following book:

Wish me luck! :-)
